In This Letter to the Editor, Gordon Folsom Relates His Experiences With the Cohen Center

The Cohen Center in Hallowell is important to myself and many other senior citizens. Fifteen months ago, I lost the love of my life, Virginia, to a long fight with pancreatic cancer.

Ginny and I were married for 62 years. She was my soul mate, my world. My family's been very supportive, but still it is very hard to deal with.

A few months after Ginny's death, a friend asked if I'd ever been to the Cohen Center for lunch? I said no, but I would try it since Ginny did all the cooking for us and I was not much of a cook. It turned out to be a smart decision. Otherwise, I would still be eating anything beside healthy meals regularly.

When I first went, it was just for the food. Once I began to go regularly, however, I made many new friends my own age.

Not only was I getting a very good, nourishing meal each day, I was also gaining friendships to help fill the void I've felt since my wife's passing.

Services provided by the Cohen Center for Spectrum Generations are so critical to the elderly. Cutting any services these agencies provide seriously hurts seniors like myself. Going to the Cohen Center for lunch helps me immensely both physically and mentally. I've made new friends and learned new things.

My deepest appreciation goes out to the Cohen Center staff for all they do for senior citizens. Thank you very much!
